(Jan 1998 to Jan 2002)

Group Managing Director

Manchester

Achievements:

Carried out a major restructuring of the business and its two overseas subsidiaries and turned around a significantly loss making business within 12 months.
Personally negotiated and won major contracts against international competition and re-established the business as a European market leader.
Applied world-class practices including lean manufacture, continuous quality improvement, six-sigma and a team based culture.
Established a strategy for future profitable business growth.
Prepared the business and facilitated its sale to a major US competitor.

I took over the Bühler group of companies at a time when the business was making a significant loss. Operating internationally, BMGL had subsidiaries in Germany and France and more than 20 distributors worldwide. The company manufactured water sampling and flow measurement equipment.

Restructuring the business involved implementing a major change in business strategy, developing the management team, closing or outsourcing loss making activities, implementing world-class business practices and taking personal responsibility for UK and overseas distributor sales channels.

In 1999 I played a pivotal role in the sale of the business to a major competitor in the USA. I was then instrumental in integrating BMGL into the new owner’s $300m global environmental business and establishing it as a prime manufacturing site and European centre of excellence.

The division was engaged in product testing, electrical assembly, PCB assembly, precision micro-component assembly and CNC machining. It employed 130 people.

The Manufacturing Division was world class in its sector and under my leadership generated growth in profit, reduced working capital and significantly exceeded its world-class performance targets.
