CV (Curriculum Vitae) / Résumé

I am currently available for software development roles using my experience of Microsoft development products. I have in-depth knowledge and experience of Windows and Web applications, specifically: VB.NET, ASP.NET, Web Services, Web Controls, MS SQL Server, Crystal Reports.
I am a self motivated individual with experience working within both a team environment and in isolation. My experience across different business sectors has made me adaptable and quick to grasp business rules relating to different situations.
Prior to contracting I was employed as a project development manager, I previously worked as an Analyst/Programmer and Internet Developer for financial services companies in Northwich and the Isle of Man. Prior to that I was employed as an Analyst Programmer for the Royal Air Force at Sealand in North Wales.

Employment History

(Aug 2007 to Apr 2009)

Web Developer

Stoke

As a member of a small team, I was responsible for the development and maintenance of a number of the company’s websites, including an affiliate system for delivering managed adverts and recording activity, and also a web based content management system. Key skills include VB.NET, SQL Server 2000/2005, Visual Studio 2005, CSS, HTML, XML, XSL, Ajax tool kit and web services. Source control was maintained and released using AccuRev.

(Feb 2007 to Aug 2007)

Web Developer

Wilmslow, Cheshire

I was brought in to enable the company to take control of their websites and databases in-house, whilst training and passing on knowledge to a new permanent member of staff. I was responsible for redesigning the company’s database, to allow future expansion of the business, and upgrading from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. I overhauled the main company website to provide ease of maintenance. The web site was developed in ASP.NET 2.0 using C#. The business and data layers were also developed using C#, connecting to a SQL Server 2005 database. The website was hosted remotely and two-way communication with the web site and in-house database was carried out using XML through web services.

(Oct 2006 to Feb 2007)

Web Developer

York

I was a member of a team of 7 developers responsible for the enhancement of a high profile project driven by the United Nations through DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). The application enables member countries and industrial installations to trade carbon dioxide emission units to comply with their responsibilities under the Kyoto treaty.
The application’s user-interface used ASP.NET (1.1) web pages and web controls, connecting via web services over multiple layers to an MS SQL Server database. Reports were written using Crystal Reports.

(Apr 2004 to Oct 2006)

Project Development Mangager

Chester

Although this position provided me with further management experience as I was responsible for a team of six, I was very much the ‘hands on’ technical lead. I was responsible for re-designing a successful asset management system which was previously written in SQL Server and MS Access (ADP). This was a two year project that resulted in the successful role out of the new application which we wrote in VB.NET and SQL Server 2000. The customer base was mainly local authorities and the application included modules for grounds maintenance, arboriculture maintenance, playground management and repetitive services. I was also heavily involved in the design and development of a booking system (sports activities, play schemes, courses) which was developed in VB6, SQL Server 2000 and Crystal reports. Existing legacy systems meant that I had continual involvement with MS Access application.
My other duties include staff management and work allocation. Chairing meetings (internal staff and external user meetings) as well as representing the company at demonstrations and presentations. I was the main point of contact for any issues relating to training, delivery, support and future product development.

(Jul 2002 to Apr 2004)

Development Team Leader

MCPC Systems, North Wales

I was responsible for a team of five, four developers and one tester. The team was responsible for the development and support of software written primarily in Visual Basic and ASP. The software connected to Access, MS SQL 2000 and Oracle databases. Main applications included a sports booking system (VB/SQL), a retail management system (VB/Oracle) and Point of Sale till software. The team was also responsible for the development and maintenance of various web sites that were hosted on the company’s public servers. Some of my other duties included the presentation of our software products to potential customers and training of end users

(Jan 2001 to Jun 2002)

Analyst/Programmer

Nelson Money Managers, Northwich

As a senior developer I was responsible for development and enhancement of in house VB6 applications, which connected to both Informix and MS SQL 7.0 databases. I was also responsible for the development of Visual Basic COM objects, which provided common business functionality and error logging, for use within the development team. I also developed stored procedures and triggers that enforce business rules at a database level. I created reports using Crystal Reports V8 as well as generating output to MS Word and MS Excel documents.

(Nov 1999 to Jan 2001)

Internet Developer

Royal Skandia, Isle Of Man

I moved to Royal Skandia from Royal & Sun Alliance International Financial Services (RSAIFS), also in the Isle of Man, after being approached by a former boss. I was responsible for the analysis, development, implementation and maintenance of a secure Internet site used by Independent Financial Advisors. The system was 3 tier and used VB Web Classes, ASP, VBScript, ADO and VB6 components to access data in MS SQL Server 7.0 databases. Reports were developed using the Active Reports product from Data Dynamics. I was responsible for the setting up and maintenance of replication between two MS SQL 7.0 databases.

(Nov 1998 to Nov 1999)

Analyst/Programmer

Royal Sun Alliance IFS, Isel Of Man

At RSAIFS I was responsible for the development of an internal directory system running on the companies Intranet, using VBScript, ASP, ADO and VB6 components to access data in an MS SQL Server 6.5 database. I was involved in the implementation and enhancement of a Premium Processing system (VB5/SQL Server/Crystal Reports). I was also responsible for the support of existing systems, written in VB5/4/3, MS SQL Server 6.5 and MS Access 2.0, some using an application layer held in MS Transaction Server. I was also given the role of SQL Server Database Administrator.

(Jan 1995 to Nov 1998)

Analyst/Programmer

RAF Sealand, North Wales

My projects at R.A.F. Sealand included a Manpower Accounting and Flexi Time system. It was successfully rolled out for use by its 1600 Employees. The system was developed in Visual Basic 4 (32 bit) and SQL Server 6.5, sitting on Windows NT. The connection to the databases was made using RDO, with most processing being kept server side using stored procedures and prepared statements. As part of a two-man team, I was involved in the full life cycle of the project. This included the installation, set up and maintenance of SQL Server and associated databases. I was also involved in user training.
Previous projects included a Test Equipment Management and Tracking System for the RAF and an electrical equipment tracking system for on-site use. Both these were developed in MS Access 2.0 and I was again involved in the full life cycle of the projects. I was responsible for a team during these developments.
During this time I also developed a Stock Control and Sales system for a motor accessories business. The system interfaces with sales tills and bar code readers and was written in VB5 and MS Access 97 running on Windows 95.
