(Mar 1979 to Aug 1998)

Chairman and CEO

International Marketing Corporation (IMC), London

Founded, and developed from scratch, this well respected below-the-line agency with 30 staff and a turnover in excess of £3M pa. to become a recognised specialist in:
· Media clients included: Express Newspapers, Channel 4 Television, Virgin Radio, Teletext
· Travel clients included: British Airways, British Midland, Delta Airlines, British Rail (InterCity), Disneyland Paris, Eurotunnel, Jetphone, Avis Europe, Avis Rent-a-Car Inc. Hogg Robinson, Thomas Cook, Club Columbus
· Retail clients included: Boots, CWS Retail, CRS, Key Markets, International Stores, BP, Shell, Courage Retail, Bass Taverns
· FMCG clients included: Imperial Tobacco, Nestle Rowntree, Quaker (Human Foods), Brillo, Disney Consumer Products, Courage Beer Brands
Developed a reputation for innovative ideas and business firsts and personally created and executed many of the Sales Promotion industry’s core standard promotions, including:
· In-pack lotteries with the John Player ‘Spot Cash’ promotion which set the ground rules that still exist today,
· Newspaper Bingo in the Daily Star. Leading to the ‘Millionaires Club’ in the Daily Express, making it the first newspaper to give away £1,000,000 in a single prize and the forerunner of all ‘newspaper games’ since – many of which were also personally created and run
· Cross media promotions. Created the first combination newspaper game / television gameshow with the Daily Star, which was hugely successful for the Daily Star and, quite by chance, enabled the Daily Star to grow it’s circulation against a savage price war between the Sun and the Daily Mirror. This type of cross media promotion then went on the be a mainstay of newspaper promotions for many years with all the tabloids entering bidding wars to link with all the most successful TV gameshows of that period.
· UK travel loyalty programme. Structured and organised from inception a loyalty programme for British Rail (Intercity) to combine with their advertising campaigns to get travellers out of their cars and into the trains. This involved incorporating our loyalty points database into the British Rail ticketing systems automatically, so as to minimise the input required by the travellers.
· UK national fantasy football. Created this when observing the success of all the ‘fantasy’ programmes in the USA. Delivered this for the Daily Star and had a hugely successful launch to some 500,000 of their readers with a minimal budget of £160,000. It continued very successfully for many years with ‘fantasy’ games being run for most major sports / sporting occasions.

Simultaneously ran Programme Funding Ltd in parallel for seven years, an Advertiser Funded Programming & Broadcast Sponsorship organisation utilising the non-traditional use of television medium for marketing purposes.
· Broadcasting clients included: Yorkshire Television Productions, Grundy Television, Central Television, Kudos Productions, Celador Productions.
· Brand clients included: Express Newspapers, Coca-Cola, Carlsberg, Schweppes.
· Having created the very first ‘broadcast sponsorship’ of a television gameshow by the Daily Star, and being party to the newly formed rules laid down by the IBA to cover such joint promotions, became one of the first to launch the idea of advertiser funded programming. Brought together producers and commercial funders such as Central Television / Ford Europe, Yorkshire Television / Express Newspapers, Kudos Productions / Schweppes into partnerships that were hugely successful for both parties.
· Brought together Celador Productions and News International in a ‘different’ sponsorship package that enabled the very first series of ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’ to be broadcast. Until that time ITV and Celador had been unable to afford the risk of someone winning the million pound prize. At that time premium rate phone calls were relatively common within the promotions industry but had never been used for a television programme – they are now in common use.

(Jan 1977 to Feb 1979)

Finance Director - Europe

Glendinning Associates International, London

The very first Sales Promotion Agency in the world. This US Corporation had set up offices around the world in response to their international clients’ demands and they had done so in a somewhat haphazard manner. Role was to set up proper financial controls and reporting systems, and having done so, proved that the European operation was losing money fast. Then presided over the closure of their European operations in the UK, Germany and France

(Jan 1975 to Dec 1977)

Finance Director

EMI Tape Ltd, Home Counties

Appointed here by the EMI Group Finance Director to assist with the turnaround of this then loss making company. The turnaround was successfully completed and record results were being achieved by the end of this 2-year period
