Employment History
(Dec 2004 to Mar 2006)
Team Leader
AylesburyCOBOL, CICS, DB2, MVS/ESA, TSO, QMF, ENDEVOR, TESTDIRECTOR,EXPEDITOR, FILEAID for DB2, MS PROJECT
Project:-
To bring the client’s pensions software into line with respect to the new ”A-Day” rules starting April 2006.
Responsibilities:-
To lead a team of 25 A/Ps, including 8 juniors, to implement the above project. Towards the end of the contract a group of “papyrus” developers joined the team. Due to the number of juniors on the team I was involved in 6 week assessments and close monitoring of there progress. They required a great deal of mentoring which enabled me to keep up to speed with my technical skills. As my team was so large I had to be very organised to manage the project and had to write weekly progress reports. I also wrote a new operating model for the mainframe programming of HBOS which was agreed by top management and implemented by me.
(Dec 2003 to Jun 2004)
Team Leader
COBOL, CICS, DB2, MVS/ESA, TSO, QMF, ENDEVOR, TESTDIRECTOR,EXPEDITOR, FILEAID for DB2, MS PROJECT, REMEDY
Project:-
To migrate Churchill systems onto Directline machine and then onto RBS machine
Responsibilities:-
To lead a team of 15 A/Ps to amend and test existing programs so that they can detect if the data being processed has sourced from a Churchill or Direct line policy/claim. Position also entailed managing overnight shift work for the system testing staff.
(Jan 2001 to Jul 2002)
Team Leader/Senior Analyst Programmer
Toyota of Europe, BrusselsCOBOL, CICS, DB2, MVS/ESA, TSO, QMF, ENDEVOR, EXPEDITOR, FILEAID for DB2
Project:-
To develop a new IBM mainframe system to replace the current European spare parts distribution system. The aim being to streamline the existing system. This as a large 160 man year project over two years.
Responsibilities:-
To lead a team of six A/Ps to develop the “picking list” portion of the system. Due to the size of the system and constant tight dead lines, close monitoring was required and the ensuring that any problems encountered in the Functional Analysis were cleared with the client or analyst as quickly as possible.
After a period of time I was asked to also takeover the responsibility for Project Quality Assurance. This involved the vetting of any program from all 80 programmers for coding standards and DB2 efficiency. I had to instruct programmers how to code SQL to ensure that DB2 calls were tuned for maximum performance No program could pass from Test to Acceptance without my signoff.
(Aug 2000 to Jan 2001)
Team Leader/Senior Analyst Programmer
Quantum Systems Management (Lloyds TSB) , LondonProject:-
Five years before I joined the current company, the two banks merged. Their major IT problem was that their mainframe systems were not compatible. It was decided to develop a CICS system to capture all incoming transactions and pass personal account details to one machine and business details to the other.
Responsibilities:-
To lead a team of six A/Ps from the coding stage of the project. As one of the team members was a junior programmer and another with very little experience of DB2, a lot of my time was taken initially mentoring. After the coding stage, myself and one senior A/P ran the system through acceptance testing and on into production..
(Oct 1997 to Aug 2000)
Senior Analyst Programmer
IronTrades Insurance, LondonCOBOL, CICS, DB2, MVS/ESA, TSO, QMF, ENDEVOR, HUON PROTECT, INTERTEST, REMEDY
Project:-
A Huon Protect Insurance package was being used to handle all transactions for the company. The field was mainly Employee/er Liability but they were breaking out into car/household/life.
Responsibilities:-
My responsibilities were split into two parts. Firstly was the maintenance of the current system that required in depth knowledge of not only the system but in the manner the data was manipulated through the system. This quite often involved nighttime callouts. My second responsibility was to develop an EDI system to streamline the retrieval and transmission of data from different client sites via a new EDI system. One of the major problems encountered being the different platforms that were being used by various clients. I further enhanced the design of the EDI system to provide data for a new data warehouse system based on a client server/MS Access platform. I was able to use the experience gained in designing the EDI system from the design work performed at Olympic Underwriting (see 1995/97)
(Jul 1997 to Oct 1997)
Senior Analyst Programmer
London Electricity Insurance, LondonCOBOL, CICS, DB2, MVS/ESA, TSO, QMF, ENDEVOR, EXPEDITOR
Project:-
In a previous year the company had bought a package from the USA that covered the sale of electricity and gas. A project was developed at that time to remove the gas processing. As times changed they realized that they would have to sell gas so another project was raised to put the gas processing back.
Responsibilities:-
I was working as an A/P amending existing programs to re-include the gas processing.
(Apr 1995 to Jul 1997)
Team Leader
Olympic Underwriting Services, LondonCOBOL, CICS, DB2, MVS/ESA, TSO, QMF, INFOMAN
Project:-
Olympic was a software house providing services to Lloyds of London syndicate management companies. The syndicates that were handled were in the state of “runoff”, in short they could not issue new policies but only pay out on old claims. The project I was involved with provided the interface between the company and Lloyds.
Responsibilities:-
Initially I was an A/P on a team maintaining the current system. When the team leader left I took his role and proceeded to develop an EDI system to interface between Lloyds and ourselves via an middleware company, London Market Claims Services (LMCS). The system was to replace the old tape system with a new electronic one. This involved extensive work within LMCS to enable them to transfer our data and streamline their method of handling returning data. When I left the company the new system was performing to the standards outlined in the original business requirement document.
(Oct 1994 to Apr 1995)
Senior Analyst Programmer
National Westminster Bank, LondonCOBOL, CICS, MVS/ESA, TSO, DB2, QMF
Responsibilities:-
Member of the bank's Human Resources department responsible for the production of employee's end of tax year P11D forms. Work involves both analysis of existing problems and undertaking coding changes to the live system
(Aug 1994 to Oct 1994)
Senior Analyst Programmer
John Lewis Partnership, LondonCOBOL, CICS, MVS/ESA, TSO, DB2, QMF.
Responsibilities:-
Member of the company's personnel department developing various management reports and online enquiries. There is a very strict hierarchical system in this company and I was assigned two junior programmers to mentor during my time with them.
(Feb 1994 to Aug 1994)
Senior Analyst Programmer
Dun and Bradstreet, High WycombeCOBOL, CICS, MVS/ESA, TSO, DB2, QMF.
Project:-
To convert the existing system from IDMS to DB2
Responsibilities:-
Good knowledge of both IDMS and DB2 were required and most programs written used both databases at the same time. This proved more efficient as the restart capabilities of IDMS and DB2 proved safer than performing downloads and saving data in GDGs. There was some exposure to AS400 programming.
