Media Sales
SportBusiness Group, London - 1999-2002 – Headhunted to join a small but dynamic concern, straddling the gap between old and new media in a new and fascinating niche. I was employee number twelve in a company that grew to over one hundred at the height of the ‘dotcom-boom’ The company has since gone public. Exiting times in wholly uncharted territory, multi-tasking was part of the job-description.
Setform, London - 1997-99 – My second stint at this company, an
uneventful time, treading water.
Global Defence, London - 1995-2002 - various short-term projects on an
ad hoc basis.
Kensington, London - 1997 A short-term project, three months to utilize
the sales leads/clients that I’d generated on the ABA project at Atalink
(see below).
Atalink, London - 1990-97 – A small vibrant contract-publishing house,
consisting just seven people when I started. An excellent opportunity for
honing sales skills as the MD had only recently launched the company and
had astutely surrounded himself with some of the best players in the
industry, certainly the most impressive sales team I’ve ever had the
pleasure of working with. Here I was able to play an instrumental part in
securing a highly lucrative contract with the American Bankers Association
(ABA).
Imperial Group, London - 1989-90 – Not a particularly clever move as the group went into liquidation less than three months after I joined. However, by this time I had got a good handle on the London media scene and was able to walk into a job the same day on recommendation.
Setform, London - 1987-89 – An altogether more amenable proposition, a
truly professional operation publishing in numerous industry sectors, here
I learned a number of sales skills and also that the industry sector whilst
not irrelevant, is certainly of secondary importance.
Media Sales & Services, London - 1987 - A pure space-selling operation
and a rude awakening to the
relative cynicism of the industry. Not a pleasant job but a lesson well learned.
BC Publications, Eye, Suffolk - 1985-87- My first job in publishing and a fantastic grounding in the mechanics of the industry. An agricultural publisher (my first publication was National Pig News!) here I learned the entire publishing process from conceptualisation of a magazine, proof reading, journalism, copy design and chasing, and of course advertising sales.
