Employment History
(Jun 1982 & ongoing)
Permanent
Was set up by me to create and sell software products. Project “Proton” was started in 1995. The pilot project was a Market Research program based on “Brand Price Trade-off” methodology. I designed and developed the programs with the assistance of an employee. The initial programs were written in VB4. The programs were rebuilt using VB5 to move reusable components into a portable run-time environment that is now known as “Proton”. This platform was moved to VB6 to get the benefits of using object oriented classes. “Proton” is now being rewritten in VB.NET; there are 200+ source and data files in the project. The development is on the Visual Studio 2008 IDE. The XML file standard was adopted before it was offered by Microsoft. I wrote the XML and DTD parsers. Some rework is necessary to switch to the .NET XML readers and writers. ADO interfaces are changing to ADO.Net with framework datasets to run with “SQL Server Express”. I have created several derived controls using the new .NET3.5 “toolstrip”, “menustrip” and “DataGridView” controls.
Apr 2007 to Jun 2007. Reviewed source code for porting from VB6 to VB 2005. Used Visual Studio 2005, preparing code for transition. The “Proton” run-time environment includes an encryption DLL a shared functions DLL, ActiveX controls, a resources management DLL and application executables. The platform runs the company accounts.
Dec 2005 to Dec 2006. Rebuilding Symsys software product range (10,000+ hours to date). The products use a common run-time environment based on Visual Basic ActiveX controls and components; the products are packaged using WISE 6 Installer. Coding standards revised. Added new facilities to the “Status Bar” control. Added “Batch Group” and “Batch” status bar node types. The batch facilities are provided for “Market1”. The “Batch facility” makes it possible to run automatically many standard scenarios of surveys and simulations of the marketing program. Added a “Check list” facility to the “Status Bar” control; multiple check lists can be added and tracked; entry locking/sequencing options encourages tight use of the facility.
April 2001 to June 2003. Worked on Symsys software products. Split VB6 packages into ActiveX controls and components. Added HTML Help. Built parsers for XML, DTD and XSLT. Extended DTD specifications to incorporate embedded SQL so that documents can be loaded on the fly. Rebuilt web site using Dreamweaver, Visual Studio, HTML, XML, ASP, VBScript and JavaScript. Adding credit card interface to WorldPay. Identified need for new package to generate XML test data using XML Schemas. Enhanced parsers to load XML schemas (XSL).

Testing Highlights
I used “ Mercury Test Director” at Littlewoods and BT. Most of my work at Stockley Park for BT was “Unit test”. I wrote “test harnesses” for Tuxedo at Unisys and at Britannic Assurance. All my work at ICL Stevenage was “system test” on ERNA III, the equivalent of Reuters! The test scripts were “multi language”, in this case English and German. I have tested teletext, Ethernet and X25 protocols with “protocol monitors”. I have tested external boxes and devices with ICE. I am developing a “Test Data Generator” as part of the Symsys product range.
Unit Test
I specified the test plan, test method and test steps with full automation where possible. I prepared scripts to load test data, call the code unit, run SQL to get results and check the expected results. Reports were constructed showing pass/fail logs. Most of the labour was spent in setting up the test data. The essence of the effort was “fully automated testing”. To test Oracle stored procedures I used KORN shell scripts to call SQLPLUS scripts to call PL/SQL anonymous blocks or stored procedures.
System Test
Tuxedo Test Harness, Britannic and Unisys. Tuxedo is a service broker message switching environment. The test harnesses were created for use in a “system test” environment but were actually used for “Integration Testing”. Test messages were set up by shell scripts using multiple queues. The results were also checked by queued scripts. The order of request/response could be specified but real-time multi-threading had to be processed “as it happened”.
Testing forms
ICL Networks, Stevenage. Set up test plans, method and test steps for testing ERNA 3, a “News Agency Network” that is the German equivalent of Reuters. Scripts were created to display Forms in parallel in English/German, with data entry in German, using a team with no knowledge of the German language. The script generator used an English / German data dictionary.
Testing protocols
Setting up test scripts for checking 5,6,7 and 8 bit Teletext protocols for ERNA 3.
On a subsequent project, set up a test plan for testing the Directory Administrator on a X400 network.
