Employment History
(Aug 2007 to 2009)
Freelance Contractor
LondonBBC: Development of business reporting and strategy maps
With Deloitte I had been developing reporting processes to the Technology board (see below), as a contractor I developed the reporting processes for the Future Media & Technology group board (the top governance board in the division).
I was responsible for developing a business performance report and the supporting
processes, which involved:
• Iteratively developing a business performance pack for the monthly FM&T group leadership board meetings.
• Co-ordinating data feeds concerning key areas such as Future Media audience appreciation figures, project statuses, corporate portfolio management, team performance, contractors, supplier service levels and costs, financials, HR and progress against audit actions.
• Documentation and handover of new processes.
The FM&T group board report steadily developed in relevance to the board over the period, which lead to it becoming a more significant part of the group board meetings as time went on.
Once the reporting process was mature, I was contracted to assist with the development of divisional objectives and support the creation of strategy maps for the division.

Consultant
LondonThis has involved a wide range of projects working for a variety of clients, mainly in the public sector but also including the media, banking, manufacturing and catering industries. Key roles are outlined below.
BBC: Development of business reporting and governance structures
Following an audits of their governance processes, BBC Technology Group wanted to improve their governance model, reporting and performance management.
Michael’s was responsible for developing a business performance report and the supporting processes, which involved similar work to what is described above, except these were for the Technology department rather than the FM&T division.
The reporting process was developed successfully and this enabled me to get a contract to develop the FM&T board reporting process when I left Deloitte.
My role on this project also involved a number of other tasks, including:
• Assessing, collating and analysing broadcast outages data for the business continuity performance report.
• Auditing the quality of supplier service performance data.
HRMC: Development of Excel based tax model predicting levels of non-compliance
In preparation for a lorry road user charge which HMRC was setting up, and working in a small team developing a compliance model to predict the amount of revenue at risk from fraud, and the effectiveness of protective measures such as spot-checks, fines, and ANPR cameras.
This role involved:
• Designing and developing the model architecture, using Excel, VBA, and the @Risk statistical modelling tool for Monte Carlo simulation.
• Co-ordinating HMRC staff research activities.
• Liaising with teams responsible for policy, compliance, enforcement measures, finance and procurement to understand what they required from the model.
• Liaising with senior HMRC and Deloitte staff to gather data and validate assumptions.
• Liaising with Mouchel Parkman traffic modellers to manage inputs into compliance model.
• Communicating results from model simulations to various audiences, explaining assumptions, simplifications and implications in the context of the model’s limitations.
• Analysis of HMRC benchmarks to develop compliance model risk groups.
• Co-ordinating the cost-compliance optimisation process, to integrate the compliance model with the Cognos cost model and using genetic algorithms (RiskOptimiser).
• Using data from separate traffic model (Saturn) to support the compliance model calculations.
• Using traffic model data and GIS mapping software to produce a map of enforcement site locations ranked by predicted capture rate.
• Reviewing, testing and documenting the model.
National Australia Group: Troubleshooting and development of Access database
I lead the support, development and management of Focus, an access database used to assess the sales of financial products for compliance. Focus had been developed rapidly, and as a result was unstable and suffering from over 100 recorded bugs when I joined the project, many of them significant and preventing use of desired functionality.
This role involved:
• rapid resolution of bugs;
• gathering new requirements and adding functionality;
• creating a number of automatically generating reports, letters and questionnaires; and
• managing junior staff member during documentation and testing of Focus.

• Led technical support for bespoke reports, resolving production issues with users.
• Debugged and tested bespoke reports and interfaces.
• Managed the release process and version control using PVCS.
• Learnt to use Oracle Applications 11.5.8 (PO/AP/GL).
Elior (a large European catering business): Data centre procurement
Investigated data centre options for Elior, who were considering keeping in-house data centre.
In 3 weeks, I:
• Constructed briefing pack and questionnaire for potential suppliers.
• Established and managed communication with these potential suppliers to obtain the required information in a short timeframe.
• Summarised and compared the basic commercial offering proposed by each potential supplier.
• Constructed related sections of the final data centre hosting strategy report to Elior.
In this time I gained a good understanding of the key criteria and metrics for selecting a data centre.
Other experience gained at Deloitte
