Motorola Automotive and Industrial Electronics Group, Stotfold, Hitchin, Herts Position: Contract PCB Layout Eng.

The design of printed circuit boards for use in automotive applications such as air conditioning controllers, engine management systems and also navigation/telematics systems. The systems basically consist of a microprocessor based core with analogue and digital input/output functions, and also communications links to mobile phones, etc. One design also involved the use of a switched mode power supply. Due to stringent EMC specifications that automotive products have to comply with, the layouts required the use of specific EMC control techniques. The boards were all of multilayer construction (generally 4 layer) with dense component placement on both sides of the PCB (double sided surface mount). All designs were intended for volume production assembly/automated test and, therefore, such requirements as optimum panel size/arrangement and 100% test coverage had to be considered at the initial design stage (design for manufacture/test). The work encompassed the complete design cycle from entry of schematic data to component part creation, board layout and finally manufacturing data creation/output. Duties also involved liasing with electronic/mechanical test/production engineers for each particular project to ensure the design met all intended criteria.
