CV (Curriculum Vitae) / Résumé
Overall Role
My role over the last few years has covered three main areas roughly in equal proportions, all of which remain current.
1. High level consulting – evangelist. Here my role was high level pre-sales. Why a client needed a storage solution, what the market looks like, and development of strategy with the client.
2. From the high level engagement a more traditional pre-sales engagement, define the specific requirements, identify a solution, build configurations and define resource requirements to support overall pricing, and support for the account team to close the deal.
3. Solution delivery. I have retained hands on skill predominantly through the delivery of POC and supporting on site delivery teams. With key involvement in detailed design and as Technical authority. This work includes derivation of all documentation including test plans, design documents and where appropriate process documentation.
My role has included management of both internal teams and of external resources either contract or from partner suppliers. In addition I have carried out Project Management functions for smaller projects (up to around 4 week’s duration with up to 6 staff).
High level Consulting
One of the key areas of work I have been involved in over the last 18 months is high level strategy development for clients (Which have included Ipsos Mori and 3i). This work has involved engagement with senior management and business management to define the business requirements for IT in terms of things such as availability, performance, data retention, security etc. This information together with information of the current and planned changes in the IT/Storage environment allows the development for a series of functional requirements for the Storage environment which is then translated into a high level vendor independent design and medium term strategy for the storage environment.
I have also recently been involved in work with a number of financial institutions in particular ING in Amsterdam and LloydsTSB in London, in relation to storage transformation projects there.
Sample Engagements
Major County Council Client
Objective: to provide a solution to support a VMWare environment.
The solution was based around EMC Clariion arrays and Brocade Fibre switches, together with EMC Networker backup tools. Part of the infrastructure existed and was upgraded as part of this project.
The work required management of my own team of staff for the platform and core Networker implementation, a contractor for detailed Networker configuration and both EMC and a third party supplier in relation to the delivery of the platform components and the VMWare environment respectively.
My role was to gather the clients requirements and provide the initial high level design. I then converted this to a solution configuration and agreed the components to be procured with the client. This was then purchased via the account manager. I also worked with EMC directly on the configuration, delivery and physical installation of the components.
I provided the detailed design for the Storage down to LUN layouts and the San design to port configuration. The detailed design for the Networker component was done by a backup specialist based on my high level design and the defined requirements.
Throughout the project I provided a Technical Project management function and was the Technical authority responsible for delivery of the final solution.
Major Aerospace Client
Objective: To provide a platform to support their Linux based SAP environment.
The solution was EMC DMX800 based to support the SUSE Linux implementation together with HP Serviceguard clustering. The solution consisted of 2 DMX800 chassis on two campus sites replicating data using SRDF/S. The SAN fabric was CISCO MDS based using MDS 9509 chassis. Management was provided by a single ECC implementation.
My role was initially to work with the clients and identify the requirements for the solution form which I defined a proposed solution. This was agreed with the clients at which point a high level design and configuration were produced from which the equipment was purchased.
I then produced the detailed design down to LUN level on the Symmetrix which was validated by EMC and implemented as a BIN file. The detailed design also included host configuration requirements and SAN configuration including the Inter Site Links required for replication. A high level backup design was also produced at this stage which was converted to a detailed design by one of my colleagues.
The solution was then implemented by myself and a team of two other delivery specialists over a period of 2 weeks. I was involved hands on in the configuration of the solution. The overall time from order to the initial SAP instance running was just over 6 weeks.
The success of this work lead to a number of further deployments at this client.
FTSE 100 Investment Company
Objective: To provide a stable, performant and scalable platform for their core Exchange environment.
For this customer their Exchange environment was key to their business. The overall project was to deliver a replacement Exchange environment to provide a more stable environment than currently experienced.
I was involved in the initial proposal work to define the overall offering which included a new Exchange 2007 environment based on a 3+1 MS cluster to be delivered by Computacenter’s MS practice and a storage platform based on EMC Clariion storage and Cisco SAN fabric.
I was involved throughout the project as the Technical Authority providing all levels of design from High level design and configuration, EMC relationship for the procurement and implementation, and the detailed design down to LUN and port level for the Storage and SAN. These components were implemented by two other members of the team.
This work lead to a number of further engagements including the development of a storage strategy and the expansion of the solution to include further application environment.
Major UK Building Society
I have worked with this organisation on several occasions ranging from initial evaluation of the CISCO MDS platform to this latest work which was to evaluate Storage Virtualisation products.
Objective: To evaluate IBM SVC vs Incipient INSP
My role was to define and deliver a test environment suitable for the evaluation which consisted of a number of hosts running various versions of MS operating system based on EMC CX and DMX, and IBM DS6000 platforms.
The environment was then built, primarily by myself within a Test Centre environment. I then worked with each vendor in turn for a 1 week period to implement their tool and together with the vendor and client run the clients test plan against the solution.
I then provided a write up of each solution from both the set up and configuration, and the testing perspective on behalf of the client.
Employment History
(Oct 2007 & ongoing)
Storage Consultant
UK / AmsterdamI moved to this organisation during October 2007 in order to work with more Tier 1 clients and to work in an organisation with more maturity in the consulting field.
My main work has been with ING Bank in Amsterdam and LloydsTSB in London, I have also been engaged with a number of other clients on more specific basis and have been involved in some pre-sales work.
The ING work was related to a number of areas in the identification of a Storage Transformation, in particular I was involved in the running of a Storage RFP covering 9 vendors, and the development of an Operational Readiness status related to transforming the environment to alternative vendors products. Other work involved the identification of particular storage savings from storage wastage and mapping of the overall environment.
Current work has been the requirements gathering and recommendation of a platform for Development and Test based on a number of Enterprise (including EMC DMX and HDS USP-V) and Mid-Range (including HDS AMS, EMC CX and NetApp products) options. This has now lead to a high level design related to a NetApp solution.
The LloydsTSB work related to the Technical assurance of the Storage Transformation solution identified. This work involved working with LloydsTSB and IBM, the chosen vendor, to ensure the solution being provided was in line with the original proposal and that the solution would be fit for purpose and deliver the benefits identified.
(Apr 2007 to Oct 2007)
Lead Storage Architect
UK wideI moved to this independent storage consultancy firm to take on the role of developing new direct consulting business. This work has involved defining storage services, customer presentations and proposal writing and the delivery of a number of storage white papers.
During my tenure we were awarded a contract related to strategic review work for Ipsos MORI, with a number of other contracts close to agreement.
The work with Ipsos MORI was to develop a storage strategy for the organisation. This is similar to the work carried out at 3i during 2006. This work included a number of review meetings with staff including the CIO and a number of other director level staff to identify business needs for IT, together with the completion of a storage audit to review the existing data profile. This information was used to develop requirements for the storage infrastructure which has then been used to develop a high level infrastructure and recommendations for presentation back to the CIO.
I left TPP in order to move to a more mature but still small Storage consultancy.
(Aug 2001 to Apr 2007)
Storage Technology Leader/ Storage Architect
UK WideMy role was to provide a range of storage related services across the broad range of solutions including overall architectures, data storage (SAN Array, SAN infrastructure, NAS, data replication etc), backup and recovery (including the definition of what backup is used for and what it should not be used for. Disk and Tape based backups, centralised backup of remote data etc), data archiving (File and email archiving to manage data volumes required for backup and maintenance of records for compliance requirements), and Storage management etc.
Normally for larger projects the day to day management of the delivery is undertaken by a full time project manager with me providing advice as required. For smaller projects I have undertaken the project management role. I am normally involved in the resource estimates and the development of the project plan and where appropriate am involved in the project initiation processes.
My role includes solution definition, vendor alignment, design, and delivery management. I am normally working on a number of solutions where I am the Technical Authority so will often have staff on several projects across the UK who will look to me for guidance with the solutions being delivered.
Part of this role includes definition of availability requirements and design of solutions to provide the required levels including Disaster Recovery. I have participated in training courses related to Crisis management. I have also been involved with assisting clients defining their DR and BC processes.
I have been involved in the definition of internal storage practices and have defined a Reference Storage Architecture for use by the organisation as the baseline for its storage offerings. I have also been heavily involved in evaluation some new to market storage virtualisation solutions.
I am a certified EMC Architect and have passed Storage Networking exams with Cisco and Brocade. I have regular exposure to other manufacturers mainly IBM, HP, Network Appliance, Symantec etc. In addition I have passed more generic storage exams from SNIA.
