CV
Between 1985 and 1999 I had two parallel careers, one in the voluntary sector and one within Local Government as an elected member until January 1999, I then took the decision not to stand for re election and to concentrate on my career development in the fifteen years to retirement. I now wish to illustrate how these parallel routes have complimented each other and given me the skills and expertise I feel are necessary for career advancement
As a Fellow of the Institute of Public Sector Management I was elected to its National Council in October 1998 and President in December 2003 -2006.
My connections with statutory services was maintained by involvement in Local Strategic partnerships and local implementation teams specialising in elderly care.
Campaigning and public relations has been an important aspect of both my professional and political life and I have developed a number of training packages around the subject. As a confessed self publicist I am convinced that one of the major factors of success is the high profile which for the organisations for whom I work have in the public arena. I am comfortable with, and a regular contributor to, all forms of media including radio and television. Contrary to perception profile does not come through ‘worthy causes’ but is achieved by hard work and conviction.
Employment History
(Mar 1990 to May 2008)
Chief Executive
* Responsible for the management of staff and budgets
Since my appointment as Chief Executive in 1990 the organisation has transformed from being 98% grant aided to a wholly independent organisation with an annual turnover of £750,000. This has been achieved by a mixture of service delivery contracts, training for others and a very successful trading subsidiary.
Developing a team approach to the acceptance of and the management of change allowed Age Concern to respond positively when difficulties arose. At a national level I was a member of the National Council of Ageing and past Chair of the Service Standards Committee of the Trading Alliance, which has put Age Concern to the forefront of Voluntary Organisations realising the need for sustainability free from the constraints grants often bring.
(1988 to 1990)
Management Training Consultant
* Working mainly with the Voluntary Sector as a trainer and grants advisor.
(1983 to 1988)
National Development Officer
Alzheimer’s Disease Society* Responsible for developing and working with local groups.
As National Development Officer my prime responsibility was to identify, train and support locally based groups and individuals as well as developing national networks which allowed the maximum amount of independence. This post also held the responsibility of Deputy Director and as such I often represented the organisation at National and International fora. I carried over the experiences learned in the A.D.S. to a private consultancy working in the main with voluntary organisations specialising in personal and organisational development.
This two year period gave me an insight into the similarity between SMEs in the commercial sector and voluntary and community organisations.
