London Money Marketing Clerical Officer

Baring Brothers, London

I was appointed as a clerical officer in the London Money Market Department. My role was in short term inter-bank lending, the transactions for which were required to be passed through an independent clearing account. I reconciled the daily account statement each morning with the transaction report that I prepared at the close of business each evening prior. Each day there would be in excess of two hundred transactions often involving more than £20 million per day. It was also a legal requirement that the clearing account could not be in deficit overnight so I had to report to the department manager each day if we had a surplus that could be lent and so earn revenue or if we had a deficit and needed to borrow to ensure that the account was in credit. On the fairly rare occasions that the account was in deficit, I needed to accurately advise on the amount needed to be borrowed on the London Money Market in order to bring the account to no more than £10 credit to minimise interest fees charged. If in credit, I needed to advise then management team of the amount that could be lent in order to maximise lending fees and still maintain as close to £10 credit overnight.
