CAREER HISTORY
Baker Hughes Limited
Region Contracts Specialist, Corporate Legal Department, Aberdeen, April 1997 to date.
Baker Hughes requires that all contracts, purchase orders etc be reviewed before acceptance for compliance with corporate policy, with appropriate legal/commercial exceptions and qualifications submitted where required. I review, prepare exceptions on and participate in negotiations in respect of contracts received by Baker Hughes from oil operators and other customers operating within Europe, Africa, Middle East, Russia and the former Soviet Union countries.
I am accustomed to working independently, to very tight deadlines, in order to include exceptions within tender submissions. Although my principal responsibility is to review contracts with particular regard to "legal" issues such as indemnities, insurances and warranty provisions, I also provide advice on matters of a more commercial nature.
Baker Hughes is frequently engaged in integrated service arrangements with other service contractors, both in the role of lead contractor and as subcontractor, and I am also regularly involved in the preparation or review of Subcontract Agreements, and also Alliances and Confidentiality Agreements.
I also periodically participate with in-house Legal Counsel in presenting "Legal Compliance and Contracts" training seminars to Baker Hughes employees involved in sales, marketing and administration, to ensure an awareness of company policies, the basics of contract formation, the risks and liabilities that can arise from poorly drafted contracts, and the need for compliance with US Anti-Trust, Foreign Corrupt Practices and Anti-Boycott legislation. To date, I have co-presented around twenty such seminars throughout the Europe/Africa/Middle East region.
Bristow Helicopters Limited
Contracts Manager, Aberdeen, July 1996 to April 1997.
I reported directly to the Regional Director, UK & Europe, and was involved in all aspects of administering existing contracts, seeking new business and the preparation of bid submissions. The work also required liaison with Operations personnel on technical aspects such as aircraft availability, range and payload, communication with Accounting personnel to ensure the timely preparation and issue of accurate invoicing with suitable back-up documentation, and regular contact with existing clients to ensure the smooth running of their contracts.
Marathon Oil U.K., Ltd
Contracts Supervisor, Aberdeen 1990 to 1996, Office Services Supervisor, Aberdeen 1989 to 1990, Contracts Administrator, Aberdeen, 1983 to 1989.
As Contracts Supervisor, I had a major responsibility for the protection of Marathon's business interests by ensuring that all agreements contained provisions appropriate to the type of work, the level of risk and the commercial exposure. However my supervisory duties were divided fairly evenly with a direct "hands on" involvement in preparing and negotiating contractual documentation, evaluating tenders etc. I assisting in developing of general contracting strategies and specific terms and conditions, to ensure these were consistent with changing industry practices as well as corporate, JOA and statutory obligations.
On first promotion to supervisory level in 1989 I spent 18 months as Office Services Supervisor as a developmental assignment, with responsibility for some 20 staff, providing a general range of "facilities management" services.
Between 1983 and 1989, as a Contracts Administrator I was involved in all aspects of administration of a broad spectrum of onshore and offshore contracts and tenders typically associated with the activities of a North Sea Operator, including but not limited to rig hire, drilling services, topsides maintenance, logistics, subsea inspection, platform catering etc.
Conoco North Sea Inc.
Contracts Assistant, Aberdeen, 1979 to 1982.
Reporting to the Contracts Co-ordinator, I prepared tenders and contracts for various drilling operations and support contracts for the Murchison Platform located in the UK North Sea. I also handled contracts for a number of logistics related activities and onshore services.
Department of Trade & Industry
Executive Officer, London, 1975 to 1979.
I worked in a number of divisions within the British Overseas Trade Board, providing advice to UK exporters on customs tariffs and documentation, and administering financial support to overseas Trade Missions. This included a six month secondment to the British High Commission, Wellington, New Zealand.
TRAINING AND EDUCATION
Current member of the Institute of Petroleum. I have attended numerous management and business skills courses, and training on the basics of oil industry technology.
Education
I graduated Bachelor of Laws (LLB), University of Aberdeen, 1975. My secondary school education was obtained at Aberdeen Grammar School.
Interests: Golf (6 handicap at Newmachar GC, where I am currently Vice Captain), photography and football (soccer). I am a longstanding season ticket holder and (minor) shareholder at Aberdeen Football Club.
