Plant Manager Jiffy Packaging Company Ltd. - Winsford 2004 - 2007

Reporting directly to the Managing Director. Accountable for all aspects of Plant management including engineering, logistics and technical development. Jiffy Packaging produces a wide range of highly recognisable branded products which includes padded envelopes, bubble wrap, packaging foams and bespoke laminates. The company employs 165 staff with an annual turnover of £21 million.

· Improved workforce morale following a period of unstable management.

· Improved safety standards by 60%. Introduced a structured approach to task orientated risk assessments and method statements.

· Introduced Lean techniques to the manufacturing environment.

· Responsible for cost reduction programs that delivered annualised saving in excess of £450k

· Increased productivity on some lines by as much as 20%

· Helped to improve turnover against a background of increased competitor activity and margin erosion.

Plant Manager (Manufacturing Director/Company Secretary) 2001- 2004

Omni-Pac UK Ltd. - Great Yarmouth

Reporting directly to the European Operations Director. Accountable for all aspects of Plant management including Director's responsibilities. Omni-Pac UK was the only mainland UK manufacturer of moulded fibre egg packaging. The company employed 200 staff with an annual turnover of £12 million. The company is a subsidiary of Pactiv, a $2.9 billion /annum multi-national packaging group.

· Turned around a £200 k/month loss into breakeven. Achieved by improving machine productivity and cost cutting projects.

· Improved overall plant productivity by 13%. Reduced downtimes, scrap levels and increased machine speeds.

· Improved Company/Union relationships following several years of unrest and industrial action. Introduced new flexibility contracts linked to a 2-year pay deal.

· Improved safety standards resulting in a 5-fold reduction in accident statistics.

· Reduced customer complaints by 35% over 2 years. Achieved through quality awareness campaigns, improved test procedures and more focussed complaint analysis

· Introduced a group wide productivity improvement program. Other plants within Pactiv adopted parts of the Omni-Pac implementation program.

· Managed the closure of the manufacturing site and the setting up of a new warehousing operation.

Production Manager SP Systems - Isle of Wight 1999 - 2001

SP Systems is one of the leading manufacturers of advanced composite materials for the wind energy, marine and industrial markets. Reporting directly to the Operations Director. Responsible for all aspects of prepreg manufacture. (The main product was a uni-directional glass fibre composite used in the manufacture of wind turbine blades) The prepreg business represents 56% of the company turnover (£50 M/annum), employing 57 staff.

· Increased the overall capacity of a custom-built prepreg machine by 75% resulting in an increase in output from 24.4 tonnes/day to 42.3 tonnes/day.

· Introduced new products to the custom built line achieving a 25% cost reduction over existing production routes and releasing capacity on other lines.

· Managed a cost reduction program to achieve savings in excess of £0.5 Million.

· Managed the move of a satellite production facility to the main operating site.

· Developed a flexible working environment to improve overall departmental efficiency.

Arjo Wiggins 1983 - 1999

Arjo Wiggins Carbonless Papers - Cardiff

Reporting directly to the UK Operations Manager. Duty Mill Manager on a weekend rota basis with responsibility on a day to day basis for 68 operatives, 5 Foreman, 3 Coating Machines and 3 Mix Plants and directly responsible for output, quality and safety in order to meet the Mill's objectives.

· Increased the overall efficiency of one coating machine resulting in a 30% increase in output from 900 tonnes/week to 1200 tonnes/week.

· Helped recommission a coater moved from Arjo's site in Lincoln and developed this coater into the fastest Thermal Coater in the World at 1100 metres/minute compared to benchmarked performances of 900 metres/minute.

· Developed a single product coater to produce one side coated and thermal paper in addition to carbonless paper, its original use, by optimising the capacity of the machinery and scheduling production accordingly.

· Introduced and supported Teamworking into the Department in line with the corporate initiative, through creating a new team culture, supporting team leaders and developing appropriate reporting systems.

· Managed the downsizing and decommissioning of the production operations during the closure of the Cardiff site ensuring that production targets were maintained at a time of reducing morale, staff numbers and skills
