Design Technician

Balfour Beatty Utilities (Bamber Bridge)

Balfour Beatty Utilities is a leading Utility Services Provider. They have major multi million pound contracts with "Blue Chip" clients including United Utilities and Transco. I joined the companies Design Team, which is responsible for the design for all Water Mains Renewal and Rehabilitation work on the clean water contract the company has with United Utilities. Main duties and skills gained:

· Design - I was a member of a team of four Design Technicians. I was responsible for overseeing the design of a water mains rehabilitation of any particular project from site survey through to the handover of design packs to Site Agents and Contracts Engineers. The design process included: -

▪ Site Survey - Carrying out a site survey to evaluate the location of current water mains and valves, along with identifying all factors which will have to be taken into consideration during the design stage

▪ Utility Information - Obtaining all relevant Gas, Water & Electricity utility information

▪ Construction Drawings - Producing Construction drawings indicating the method, path size of proposed mains, along with indicating all proposed valves and fittings using AutoCAD Map 2000

▪ Work Notices - Issuing work notices to Local Councils and members of the public who will be affected by proposed works

▪ Meetings - Arranging and attending meetings with United Utilities and Local Council to discuss the design and resolve any possible issues such as Traffic Management etc.

▪ Health and Safety - Ensuring all Health and Safety, CDM and current legislation requirements are incorporated into the design

▪ Scheduling - Producing a parts and materials list along with a cost schedule

▪ MS Project - Created Program of Works Gantt Chart using MS Project.

▪ Communication - Constant liaison with Design and Construction Managers to ensure design is accurate and practicable

▪ Producing packs with all relevant drawings, Utility and Health and Safety information to hand over to Site Agents and Contracts Engineers.

Enterprise Plc. is a major support services provider, with clients in the Public and Private Sectors. The company provides a broad range of services, with clients in Water, Gas, Local Government, Electricity, Education and Telecoms sectors. I joined the Management Services Department, which is responsible for the Design Management of a major multi million pound water contract the company had with United Utilities. Responsibilities and skills gained:

· As-Built Drawings- I was responsible for the production of 'As-Built' drawings. This involved liaising with Site Agents and Project Managers, transferring data received from site onto AutoCAD Map 2000, retrieving correct ordnance Survey Map information, and producing plans to scale showing all the relevant water mains and services layout information.

· Design - Currently receiving ongoing training to develop into a Design Technician. This would make me responsible for overseeing the design of a whole scheme from site survey through to the handover of Design Packs onto Site Agents and Contracts Engineers.

· Initiative - Recognized the need for a Drawings Register, and hence, I created a Drawings

Register with all relevant data using MS Excel. This Drawings Register is currently

in use.

- Produced Gantt Charts using MS Project

- Produced Organisational and Flow Chart Diagrams using MS Visio Software

· Problem Solving - Devised a system for the Quantity Surveyor, using MS Excel with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), allowing the QS to calculate all the costs involved for a Water Mains Rehabilitation Project, and produce a Cost Estimate Report from the Excel Worksheet.

· Training - Attended a 2 day CDM (Construction, Design Management) training course, outlining and creating greater awareness of all Construction based Legal, Health and Safety requirements

AutoCAD Operator

Lancashire County Council ,(Preston)

Lancashire County council is the largest County Council in the UK. It manages a Property

Portfolio, containing in excess of one thousand properties. I was a member of the e-drawings

team, which is responsible for the production and maintenance of e-drawings. Responsibilities

and skills gained:

· Data Transfer and Conversion - Downloaded data received from Surveyors using Be-spoke MBS Survey Software, and converted this data into AutoCAD usable format.

· Production of Plans - Using the data received from surveyors, produced floor plans to scale, ensuring all plans satisfied the required checklist criteria, using AutoCAD versions 2000-04.

· Database Administration - Created and managed a database on a daily basis, keeping an accurate record of significant information regarding Surveying, Properties and Plans.

· Analytical Reports - Reports were produced from this database, which was used for analytical, and decision making purposes.

· Problem Solving

- Analysed the current drawings record system, and made recommendations for a new system. These were incorporated and the new record system is currently in use.

- Through my knowledge and experience with AutoCAD Software, I customised AutoCAD which helped streamline the drawing process, and hence saving a great deal of time for the Council as well as fellow Draughtsmen.

· Project Co-ordination - As I was working on number of projects simultaneously, I would liaise with the Projects administrators to ensure the correct prioritisation of jobs ensuring deadlines would be achieved.

· Surveying - Received training and hands-on Surveying experience from qualified surveyors. Carried out building surveys using Leica Total Station, DISTO and MBS Survey software.

Amey Datel is a rail technology solutions provider. It installs, maintains and provides real time

information services to rail companies and railway stations. I was the Main Draughtsman

employed by the company. Responsibilities included:

· Produced drawings using AutoCAD R14. Drawings ranged from component and product diagrams to equipment layout plans.

· Update and manage drawings database using Microsoft Access, along with updating and maintaining manual drawing records.
