LeedsArchitectural Technology Practice Placement
This fixed term one year industry placement forms a mandatory element of the Architectural Technology BSc (Hon) course. It contributes to the practical experience required for the Associate Membership of BIAT (British Institute of Architectural Technologists). The work undertaken in the placement is assessed and provides the opportunity to participate in a work based learning environment. My placement with JAMM allowed me to use the concepts and skills I acquired in my previous two years in university to the wider context of the design and construction industry. As a paid employee I also gained experience of working in a team with assigned areas of responsibilities and working to strict deadlines as well as developing a strict work ethic for reliability and good timekeeping.
After a brief induction period I was able to work on a variety of projects moving from client briefings to research and liaison with the relevant professional bodies and statutory controls. I was able to make use of my own technical knowledge of AutoCAD in the production of drawings and establish myself in the office system for the control of document production. My construction knowledge and design skills were used to contribute to elements of different projects and design briefs. The year was very successful and enjoyable and provided me with a valuable insight into my chosen profession as well as adding immeasurably to my continuing professional development.

Core Skills
Communication:
My current studies involve a high level of written ability, where I have to produce coursework and written reports. My architectural work has allowed me to develop spatial awareness and I am especially skilled in technical drawings, their production and interpretation. I have also worked as a part-time shop assistant, and am confident verbally and in meeting and dealing with the general public.
ICT:
I am fully conversant and up-to-date with the main computer operating systems and totally confident in using advances technology including CAD programmes to the BS1192. I am able to search and select appropriate information, and develop and present information in a variety of formats, including written reports.
Working with others:
From an early age I have been involved in team work. I represented my school at various sports, including rugby and the Yorkshire County Cricket in their junior side. My sixth form education also encouraged me to engage in team work where we had to take on different roles, including leadership. I feel comfortable in both receiving and giving instruction.
Personal Qualities:
I am an outgoing individual, who enjoys the company of others and at the same time can work to strict deadlines and adopt positions of responsibility. My reliability is proven with an excellent attendance and punctuality record at school, university and in my part-time employment. I am honest and never abuse positions of responsibility entrusted to me. I do have a sense of humour, but not at the expense of others. I would seek to be an asset in any organisation through my talent, my hard work and endeavour. I consider my greatest strength, however, to be that of creativity and an ability to think innovatively and differently.
