Previous Employment:
April 2002 - Present
Group Health & Safety Manager - DaimlerChrysler UK Ltd
I was appointed to my current position following my early retirement from the Police Service following a leg injury.
I have overall responsibility for all health, safety and environment matters throughout all parts of DaimlerChrysler UK Ltd (DCUK), DaimlerChrysler Retail Ltd (DCR) and DaimlerChrysler Services (DCS). This means responsibility in office accommodation, logistics, and in vehicle sales and aftersales centres in Milton Keynes, Birmingham, London and Manchester.
I currently report directly to the Company Secretary, who is a member of the Board of both DCUK and DCR. I have a team of full time safety advisors reporting to me on the health & safety issues within retail sites owned by DCR, and within in the logistics centre within DCUK. I manage the health, safety and environment budget, which is used for issues from remedial building work, DSE sight test, to the use of consultants
Since joining the company I have reviewed all policies and procedures and rewritten many of them. I have introduced new policies and procedures, which includes accident reporting and management procedures, which encourages open and honest accident reporting. This in turn identifies trends and styles of accidents, and those employees who are more susceptible to suffer accidents. As a consequence I have been able to identify training needs, the need to change working systems, and risk assess certain individuals and procedures. This in turn has produced a down turn in the number of accidents recorded, and also a reduction in personal injury claims made against the company.
I also work closely with our insurance brokers and insurers. During which I was able to demonstrate to our insurers the company's ability to manage workplace health and safety, our accident management systems. This has shown a reduction in the amount of claims against the company, which in turn led to a 10% reduction in the companies employers liability insurance premium for 2005 and a further 15% reduction for 2006.
I have also highlighted to the Board of Directors their personal liabilities for health and safety at work, and as a consequence the subject is now high on their agenda. I have also heightened health and safety awareness throughout the company by arranging training from fire awareness to manual handling, and by a series of articles within the in house magazines. I have successfully completed training for the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health's (CIEH) Professional Trainers Certificate. I am now an accredited tutor for the CIEH and deliver a range of health & safety training.
I am currently planning and time scaling the delivery of the ISO 18001 and 14001 standards for the company. It is anticipated that ISO 14001 will be completed by December 2005, and ISO 18001 by mid 2006.
DaimlerChrysler in the United Kingdom is seen as the bench mark for health and safety within the DaimlerChrysler group across Europe. I have advised on safety standards in Germany, Italy and Denmark. I have also travelled to America to advise Mercedes Benz USA on workplace safety.
October 1981 - April 2002
Constable - British Transport Police
1981 - 1990 - Police Constable - London Underground Area
During this period I served as a general patrol Constable, these duties included driving a Police response vehicle in central London. I passed my Police driving course in 1983 being made a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. In addition to my patrol duties, from 1988 to 1990 I was responsible for rostering officers for an entire sub-division, which involved ensuring there were sufficient officers available to cover the sub-divisions Policing requirements.
1990 - 1992 - Police Constable - Force Intelligence Bureau, FHQ
During my short secondment to the intelligence department I was responsible for collating and disseminating football intelligence throughout the Force.
1992 - 2002 - Police Constable - Crime Management Centre, London North Area
In this post I was responsible for the accurate recording of crime, and offenders on both the Force's computer systems and national computer systems. This involves decision making on some 75,000 crimes per annum. These are all reportable offence, notifiable offences to the Home Office, and summary offences. During this time I was appointed as Deputy Crime Manager, therefore running the Department in the absence of the officer in charge. In addition to this I received a commendation for my initiative and efforts in writing several manuals of guidance, to assist officers in completing their paperwork, accurately and on time. These manuals were published throughout the Force as best practise. During this posting I was also successfully appointed, by the Association of Chief Police Officers, as an accredited police artist.
1991 - 2000 - Secretary to British Transport Police Federation
Concurrent to my last two postings I also served as Secretary to the British Transport Police Federation, the representative body of the Police Service. I was responsible for representing fellow officers in disputes with management and in disciplinary proceedings. In 1996 the Government removed the Police Service's Crown immunity to Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974. I was involved in the planning and implementation of the procedures to the Force, and consequently gained an excellent knowledge of Health & Safety practices and procedures. I was appointed Chairman of the Federations Health & Safety Committee. As a consequence of Health & Safety applying to the Police Service, the Police Federation successfully negotiated the issue of overt stab proof vest, long or extendable baton's and incapacitant sprays.
