Site Control & Electrical (C&E) Support Engineer - Syngenta Ltd - Grangemouth

In addition to the dimensions and responsibilities of the previous role of Senior Descon Engineer including the Plant C&E Engineer I now:

Undertake the role of the Site Lead SIS and Area Classification Engineer, ensuring compliance within the lifecycle of these key areas and coaching other engineers to appropriate levels ready for approval;

Provide technical assistance to the Site Responsible Electrical Engineer ensuring that all areas are compliant, operating and being maintained to current Legislation. This involves networking with other engineers within and external to the company ensuring that changes to legislation and relevant British, European and International standards are adopted within the company via the Syngenta UK CE forum;

Provide technical assistance or lead internal investigations for electrical related incident / deviations, prepare and present reports to share findings at all levels on site and at a UK level via the Syngenta C&E forum;

Provide assistance for site audits by the regulatory authorities (HSE/SEPA) at Grangemouth as part of the ongoing COMAH inspections;

Line manage a small group of technical clerk and technician resource and recently a Trainee CE Engineer.

Senior Design & Construction Engineer - Syngenta ltd - Grangemouth

This role absorbed the existing responsibilities of the Design Engineer within the projects group and the additional responsibilities and accountabilities, outlined below.

Act as a Project Engineer responsible for up to 20 concurrent projects lasting between 10 to 100 weeks with a typical overall budget value of up to £5M with an individual order approval/authorisation limit up to £25,000. Actual maximum individual project value managed was £2.2M.

Accountable for the all aspects of the delivery and execution of the project, requiring me to manage multi functional design teams of both Syngenta and agency staff of up to 15 people.

Responsible for reviewing the forward resource commitments to meet key target dates appropriate to workload and customer requirements. Under the Construction Design & Management Regulations accountable as the Planning Supervisor.

In addition to the build type projects I was also responsible for a number of Key Operational Record compliance projects and acted as the site-engineering representative for the Syngenta Grangemouth COMAH report.

Authorised to approve Safety Instrumented Systems, Equipment for use in Hazardous Areas and act as a C&E assessor for plant modifications via the management of change process.

In October 2001 I was appointed as the Plant CE Engineer for two Manufacturing plants and one Formulation and Packing plant. As well as providing technical assistance I was responsible as the electrical duty holder ensuring that the plants were operated and maintained in line with current company standards and were in compliance with the Electricity at Work Regulations. This required me to investigate and set a maintenance strategy for the CE equipment on plant and identify a refurbishment programme to replace obsolete equipment within suitable periods, ensuring the safety and reliability of production. In addition to the standards of hardware installed on plant I was responsible for ensuring that Key Operational Records were available and up to date through auditing regimes.

Design Engineer (C&E) - Zeneca Ltd (Syngenta Ltd from Nov 00) - Grangemouth Works

Mainly taking on the role of multi-functional Project Engineer for up to 10 concurrent projects with individual values between £5k and £1M. I responded directly to the Project Manager, and was responsible for leading the project team; from the definition through to commissioning, ensuring that all statutory and company reviews were carried out and documented. I acted as the "Designer" under the CDM regulations. I had to co-ordinate all functions within and external to the project group, liasing with the customer, installation contractors, and suppliers.

For larger capital projects (>£50M), I acted as the Project C&E Engineer responding directly to the Senior Project Engineer. Individual budget responsibilities of up to £6.5M were undertaken. Working through all stages of the project including the specification, selection of equipment, and management the detail design teams. In some instances acting as the C&E Construction Engineer during the construction phase liaising with the C&E build contractor, looking after overall electrical safety issues on the construction site. In addition I was also responsible for ensuring that the final build was to an acceptable quality and complied with both Zeneca and statutory requirements.

Control & Electrical Designer - Zeneca Ltd (Formerly ICI.) - Grangemouth Works

In this role I responded directly to the Control and Electrical (C&E) Project Engineer. I was responsible for the C&E content of projects, with budgets typically in the range of £10k to £250k. Leading the C&E design teams. My primary duties included estimating, selection of equipment, procurement, and detail design.
