Engineering Designer Goss Graphics Systems, Preston 1991-Present

Goss Graphics Systems is a world-leading newspaper press manufacturer, based in the US with a plant in Preston. My position in the engineering function involves all mechanical aspects of the design of new and reconfigured presses, from single components to entire systems, working with CADAM.

Main achievements:

· Designed main shaft- and belt-drives for multi-unit press installations, worth over £100k. Analysed gear and bearing loads to achieve bearing life of 30k hours at maximum press speed plus 25% for future development.

· Managed extensive research and development into improved lubrication of main printing cylinder bearer rings, reducing oil leaks by at least 50%, thereby significantly increasing customers' satisfaction with the press.

· Engineered solutions to problems occurring during site installations, reducing backlog by 63% in six months, contributing to departmental savings of £90k.

· Developed press guarding to be user-friendly, yet still meeting strict EC health and safety regulations. Produced generic design to cover all printing unit options, reducing design time, and hence cost, of future contracts.

· Designed complete and extensive upper press access platforming, conforming to health and safety regulations. Integrated customer's mid-project specification changes, so that final design was to his complete satisfaction.

Design Draughtsman Crabtree Vickers Ltd, Leeds 1987-1991

Crabtree Vickers was a manufacturer of a variety of printing machinery, including newspaper presses. My responsibilities included design and detailing of mechanical and electrical assemblies.

Main achievements:

· Modernised the design of electrical control cabinets and board layouts, optimising the space required to house necessary components, resulting in smaller, cheaper cabinets.

· Pioneered the use of CAD in the company, working as part of the initial team set up to introduce Autocad to a manual drawing office. Benefits of speed, accuracy and repeatability quickly apparent to the company, increasing productivity.
