PROJECT AND ASSIGNMENT EXPERIENCE
BNFL: 2001 to date
Senior Design Engineer
Civil, Structural & Architectural Department
Responsible for the static and seismic Finite Element analysis of substantial nuclear related steelwork and reinforced concrete structures using ANSYS 4.4, 5.6 & 5.7.
Structures included a new substantial steelwork roof consisting of nine braced lattice girders 6m deep 70m long and 5m spacing and supported by two 11m high 1m thick concrete shear walls. The roof provides support to structural components and plant by a hanger system. A reinforced concrete duct 5m wide and 4m deep and supported 16m off the ground by structural steelwork and reinforced concrete towers.
As part of the COSR for an existing large nuclear related facility at Sellafield, static and seismic analyses of the structure were carried out. The structure comprises of a steel frame 34.5m high, 78m wide and 270m long with reinforced concrete floors supporting reinforced concrete operating facilities. As well as the facilities supported directly by the steel frame, the building housed other massive reinforced concrete facilities on separate foundations. The structure was subdivided for analysis purposes at appropriate joints in the superstructure and housed facilities. I was responsible for the analysis of one of the sections of the superstructure supporting some of the reinforced concrete facilities.
Also carried out material and geometric non-linear time history analysis of impulse loads on structures and structural components.
Bechtel Water Limited: 1997 to 2001
Senior Engineer
Structures Section, Central Engineering Group
Responsible for the analysis and design of substantial reinforced concrete water retaining structures making extensive use of the Finite Element analysis method. Both hydrostatic and hydrodynamic loads were considered for structures in seismic zones. The ARIES pre and post processor was used in conjunction with the NASTRAN FE solver.
Most structures were for North West Water and included Liverpool BAFF, which is a large (110m x 45m x 11m) reinforced concrete, 20 cell tank, Birkenhead BAFF, Bromborough BAFF, Fazakerley BAFF, Birkenhead Storm, Blackburn Final Tank, Royton and Failsworth Humus tanks. Other large water retaining structures were analysed, designed and independently assessed for the North of Scotland Water Authority, such as a Storm Tank (58m x 25m x 8m) and a 4 cell SBR Tank (60m x 35m x 6m) on the Moray Coast. Many other rectangular and circular structures were analysed and designed associated with water supply and wastewater, including a large (115m x 37m x 12.5m) firewater and mains water pumping station for a refinery in India. This structure was subjected to static, seismic, hydrodynamic and hydrostatic loads. Carried out a dynamic analysis of a large (45m x 17m x 11m) Seawater Surge Basin Pumping Station in Abu Dhabi to ensure that the vibrations from the eight pumps and drive units were within acceptable limits. Carried out a structural assessment of Seathwaite Tarn mass concrete gravity dam.
Formed part of an investigation team to identify the failure of large hydraulic press plates. My main roll was to carry out a large non-linear elastic-plastic FE analysis of the hydraulic press plates under various load conditions to assist in the identification of the possible cause of the failures.
Carried out Independent Nuclear Safety Assessments (INSA) of civil and structural Design Assessment Reports (DAR), which formed part of the Continued Operation Safety Report (COSR) submissions of various structures for BNFL.
Developed a comprehensive FE analysis post processor, in FORTRAN, to carry out the full reinforced concrete design to BS8007 and BS8110 for slabs and walls. The forces and moments were taken directly from the FE analysis and the reinforcement selected which satisfied the BS8007 and BS8110 design requirements. The results were output as contour plots of the bar sizes and spacings for the required directions and surfaces. Developed design tools, using VBA in Excel 97, for a wide range of circular and rectangular tanks, to speed up the bid process.
Allott & Lomax Consulting Engineers: 1993 - 1996
Principal Structural Engineer
Responsible for the independent assessment of technical reports submitted in support of the safety case of nuclear related structures, which include the CSB Faslane Shiplift and the Rosyth Naval Docks for AEAT (SRD).
Prepared an internal seismic design guide for the design of structures to Samarinda power station based on the Indonesian Seismic Design Code. Preparation of an internal seismic design guide for the design of structures to King's Lynn power station based on the Uniform Building Code 1994 Edition (UBC). Carried out an independent assessment of the seismic design basis of a power station boiler in Hong Kong.
Analysis and design of machine foundations for Gas Turbine Generators, Steam Turbine Generators, Fans etc. subject to static, dynamic and seismic loading for power stations in Britain, Israel and India. Powers Stations included; Salt Union, Kemsley Mill, Didcot, Indian Queens, Godavari and the Dead Sea. The analysis was carried out using a combination of FE and traditional methods. FE analysis was carried out using ANSYS. Traditional methods were carried out using a program written by myself within Excel for the analysis of machine foundations.
Carried out computational fluid dynamics analysis of chimneys to determine the cooling air velocity, gas and surrounding air temperatures, flue and windshield surface temperatures under different ambient conditions.
W S Atkins Consulting Engineers:1989 - 1993
Initially Head of Stress Analysis Section and subsequently Head of the Structural Mechanics Department at the North West regional office. Responsible for all aspects of running the department, including technical supervision, project management, costed proposals, billing, reporting and client liaison.
Undertook all aspects of structural integrity assessment in a wide range of industries including the static, dynamic, seismic and blast Finite Element analysis of a large nuclear related steel and concrete marine structure, the CSB Faslane Shiplift. FE analysis of large steel-framed liner to the Sizewell 'B' dome using substructuring techniques. FE analysis of a cable supported steel access platform used for the decommissioning of a radioactive contaminated chimney at Sellafield.
Assessment of existing bridges on the M56 to current standards. Non-linear FE analysis of a cable stayed steel swing bridge to assess the dynamic behaviour under wind and impact loadings. FE analysis of an old cast iron plate girder bridge to assess the lateral stability of the bridge as part of the bridge assessment to current requirements. Large FE analysis of an inverted 'T' box type reinforced concrete, post tensioned, cast in situ, span to an existing Railway Bridge for its new use as part of the Manchester Metro Link. All the FE analysis was carried out using the FEMGEN and FEMVIEW pre and post processors, respectively, with ASAS as the Finite Element solver.
Developed software for the design of lattice type structures such as transmission and communication towers. The program was written in FORTRAN on a SUN workstation.
NNC Ltd: 1986 - 1989
Senior Engineer
Responsible for the co-ordination and management of complex technical projects involving the day-to-day supervision of a team of engineers. The main project was for the analysis and design of the steel liner penetrations to the main containment building of Sizewell 'B'. Other projects were for various nuclear power stations and included the assessment of pipework and nuclear pile cap penetrations.
Carried out axisymmetric, asymmetric and 3D solid and shell thermal and stress FE analysis of various nuclear power station components using linear and non-linear analysis, such as gap and large displacement and material non-linear analysis, such as yielding and strain hardening and softening. The IDEAS pre and post processor was used with ABAQUS as the main FE solver. Responsible for the preparation of reports in support of the nuclear safety case.
Wimpey Laboratories Ltd: 1982 - 1986
