November 1998 to July 2008, IT Manager (OUCE, Oxford University):
Due to continued reorganisation within Oxford University, I took voluntary redundancy from my post as IT Manager at the end of July 2008 - this means I am available almost immediately (I am currently planning a couple of over-seas volunteer jobs but employment will take priority).

Primary Responsibilities (not limited to):
• Manage the core network spanned across two subnets via single firewall to the university back-bone, wired and wireless
• Manage several staff (including IT Officers, Web Master and Programmer)
• Build and manage servers, combination of Microsoft, Linux and Solaris on real and VMWare virtual machines, including live and fall-back
• Manage web servers and sites (LAMP/WAMP)
• Manage RAIDS (up to 24 drives)
• Manage server backups to a central ADSM backup server
• Manage approximately 250-300 desktop PC’s
• Manage student and staff owned laptops
• Manage approximately 1000 accounts
• Manage email server and email accounts (Exim)
• Negotiate and modify SLA’s
• Design and specify expansion for hardware and networks, source and buy hardware, submit requests for larger than normal funds to cover costs of new servers & storage
• Audit network and systems
• Server and data migration and server relocation

I was originally employed as an Electronic Instrument Engineer but this developed into a computing position as PC’s became more important in the department. I became responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the desktop side of computing in the department as well as interfacing to experiments.
