Responsible for drafting and implementing product technology and company infrastructure roadmaps.

Engaged on a strategic core network operations outsourcing project delivering solutions for Vodafone, taking in the deployment of new IN, Prepay and HLR infrastructure for increased subscriber capacity (6m prepay, 16m MVNO) and decommissioning of over 100 nationwide redundant legacy network elements to achieve OPEX savings as well as managing a mix of in-house and third party operations, development and test teams to deliver new marketing propositions. Also managed a software development project to deliver additional Prepay functionality and a number of sub projects. As well as strong project management and people skills, this role required considerable technical understanding to liaise with the many diverse technical teams and specialists.

Responsible for delivery of IS workstreams, namely Telephony, Flexible Computing, LAN/WLAN, Resource Booking, Document Management and Location Independent training infrastructure, with activities geared around procurement, delivery and commissioning of IT equipment and services.

Engaged to take over management of complex £3m project in PRINCE2/MSP environment with virtual teams, multiple dependencies and third party suppliers to design and implement a revised architecture for network management systems & OSS systems (TeMIP, EMC Smarts, HP Openview). The initial brief was to reduce complexity, support costs and provide high availability solutions and fault tolerance for a priority 1 mission critical service, by consolidating 65 HP Alphaservers into 28 high availability clusters, also reducing the number of data centres required. The role was subsequently expanded to take in transitioning further high profile network management projects into live, resulting in a £15m programme. Responsibility for financials, risk/issue management, quality management, resourcing, 3rd party supplier management over complete lifecycle.

Designed and implemented a rapid build deployment mechanism for Windows XP laptop and desktop machines and guided the rollout into a legacy Windows NT4 domain across a nationwide infrastructure. Innovative design cut Individual machine deployment time from 1.5 hours to under 10 minutes, exceeding customer expectations.

Engaged to turn around a 2 year late £5M project to roll out SS7/IP Sigtran upgrades across Vodafone's entire UK network to provide VOIP services capability. The project was re-aligned with business strategy and kept on time, budget and quality throughout tenure.

Asked personally by a main board director to assess a stalled project to provide engineers with rapid access to workflow tools. Re-engineered technical design, introducing Blackberry hand-held devices and also the project brief by bringing in new product angles as a marketing tool and involving sales & marketing as a customer, which removed a number of previously problematic political & financial barriers. Hailed as “a fantastic achievement” by VF marketing, who now use the product as a showcase, and opened up the product to a wide range of browser enabled mobile devices in addition to Blackberries using innovative HTML/Web/Middleware techniques & tools. Main project benefit of OPEX cost reduction of £1.7m p/a was comfortably achieved.

Resolved a number of technical and process issues with the “Mobility Solutions” (Mobile Internet) devices product portfolio. Acting as cross-functional liaison between various departments, managed and assisted with sensitive VIP issues and guided & resolved a number of critical issues with the roll-out of new product portfolios as well as designing and running technical training courses for IT support staff. Worked on both VIP internal pilot and live customer launch of “Vodafone Live” MMS (Picture Messaging) rollout and worked extensively with specialist support teams resolving MMS, GPRS and interoperation issues specifically with the Sharp GX10 handset, managing and resolving problems with both suppliers and internal departments.


Interim I.T. Director for Greener Solutions Ltd, 2001 – 2002.
Responsible for the complete IS strategy of this rapidly growing mobile handset recycling company, including internal office infrastructures for London and Munich offices, external communications and international multi-site VPN deployment. Managed design and implementation of a bespoke Web/RDBMS system based on the LAMP stack for capturing data on end of life mobile phones, integrated with partners MIS systems and also the UK and German banking system to handle transactions from 10,000 partner dealerships.

Produced specifications for 3G handsets and mobile devices for third party manufacturers, designed and documented support processes, carried out technical assurance reviews for the 3G and GPRS Quality programmes and co-wrote the requirements document for engineering mode on 3G devices, subsequently presented to and well received by 3GPP.
