VMware & Windows project resource

Environment: Windows 2000 & 2003, Linux & ESX 3.5

 Providing expertise in windows and vmware on various projects
 Look at the current Netbackup 6.5 environment and provide improvements as backups slow and some occasional failures.
 Netbackup and VCB integration project. Netbackup 6.5 is currently used and a requirement to move the vmware servers to a VCB (SAN) backup instead of the current LAN bakcup. Resourced to design and implement this environment so that it fits in with the current netbackup set up. Disaster Recovery also a requirement.

VMware design & support Analyst

Environment: 250+ ESX Hosts (HP Blades, DL585), HP EVA, Windows 2000, 2003, XP

 Supporting an ESX environment of 3.0.2 & 3.5 with virtual center 2.0.2 & 2.5, split over 3 environments: Pre-production, Production & Disaster Recovery within Lloyds TSB. Over 2000 XP guests and up to 200 Windows server guests, all windows 2003.
 Working on 10 concurrent projects and providing general VMware knowledge to all members of the teams. Understanding the working environment (procedures, staff, and priorities) of Fujitsu and Lloyds TSB so that the customer is always happy and working together.
 Involved from start to finish on all projects from design & documentation, build acceptance, guest builds & support. Working closely with design architects and project managers to move projects forward and on schedule and within budget.
 Proving Windows support where necessary such as Microsoft clustering 2003, active directory, file & print services and SAN management. This was to move projects on faster and to speed up fault diagnosis.

 Working in a new developed team of 2 providing a rota covering between 08:00 – 18:00 Mon – Fri and an on call rota plus heavy weekend work schedules to help keep projects on target.
 Documenting standard procedures, training Fujitsu staff in VMware basics from virtual center, ESX command line, template creation and guest builds. Proof reading and signing off VMware designs for any new projects, assisting with VMware & windows general questions to any project on request.
 Using automated ESX builds with Altiris with a designed security template and following bank standards. Server and working guest builds follow bank standards and are a mixture of templates and altiris builds.
 VMware Maintenance, daily checks of hosts and virtual center, including performance and capacity. Monthly patch management using altiris.
 Providing 3rd line support for VMware servers and working closely with VMware when needed.
 Advising a new project on an ESX 3.5 upgrade and virtual center 2.5 upgrade.
 Using Fujitsu and Lloyds TSB ITIL such as change management and Peregrine helpdesk. Knowledge of these required to provide support and arrange necessary downtime for patching and support problems.

 Completed large Project to install 8 new ESX 3.0 hosts and migrate existing virtual machines currently on ESX 2.5 to ESX 3.0. Also identifying physical servers for virtualisation. Maintain and administer current VMware environment (10 + 8 new hosts, 100 vm’s) VMware. Worked with the design team in America to perfect the build and documentation.
 Responsible for server builds and support of EMEA domain (Windows 2000 and Windows 2003). This varies from standard server builds, to virtual and ESX Servers. Supporting some specific bank applications, DFS, and providing weekend and evening support when required.
 Projects include windows 2000 upgrade to 2003 (including hardware refresh).

IT Server Analyst

Environment: 2000+ Servers (NT4, Windows 2000, 2003, VMware).
HP (DL360//380/385/580/585), HP Storage Works MSA1000/1500, HP Netservers, HP EVA.

 I was part of a major Decommissioning & Data Migration Project. Working closely with the Architect and Technical Lead, my role was to review, troubleshoot and advice on the process and procedures designed for the migration of the legacy NT4 environment to Windows 2000 & Windows 2003 Active Directory. The project incorporated over 400 servers, where my role was to analyse the legacy server and migrate users & groups and shared folders. We are now implementing a new DEV and CTE Domain in which I provide the same support for migrating servers from the old domains to the newly created domains.
 Responsible for server builds and support (deployment in both Windows 2000 and Windows 2003). This varies from standard server builds, clusters (including SQL & Exchange) to virtual servers and virtual clusters. Familiar with VMware P2V products, power p2v and platespin.
 Spent 18 months setting up the Disaster Recovery site at Victoria and Vauxhall, dealing with all Disaster Recovery issues such as server builds, tests, updates, new hardware additions and helping production staff complete their own configurations and builds when needed. I was also the main contact for overseas staff when they were performing disaster recovery tests in London.
 Was seconded to the Hong Kong office from December 2002 till May 2003 providing server specialist support while the IT department needed extra cover. Also covered Helpdesk and Desktop support duties. Was later sent to the China and Singapore office to perform server builds and general IT duties.
 Working in a team of 10 server specialists covering some weekends & 24-hour on call rota system. All team members specialise but we are all able to support all systems, including, VMware, netbackup, active directory, HP EVA’s, physical hardware problems, general windows administration, WINS, DNS, DHCP, disaster recovery and any general support issues within London or Globally.

 Daily work involves current projects, checking system alerts emailed via Netiq Appmanager, Insight Manager and Solarwinds, fixing any problems arising; also helping remote offices with more technical issues should they need it. Monitoring a large backup system using Netbackup, Arcserve and Backup Exec. Providing technical knowledge within projects and knowing ITIL processes.
 Large 2 year project to move 2500 users & 1000 servers to new office building, involved intensely throughout project with moves, upgrades & hardware changes.
 I am the main contact for all support issues within our DEV and CTE (mirror of production) domain. This covers 150 physical servers and 350 virtual servers which are built on VMware (ESX 2.53) and administrated via Virtual Centre. I provide technical support for the 11 physical ESX Servers. These servers are presented with 12TB of data which is supplied by Datacore’s SAN Melody solution. Was recently seconded, together with a network specialist, to our Brussels office to perform a full audit on their 40 servers and network. Also involved in configuring the labs brocade switches to allow fibre connectivity to new ESX and windows servers.
