Project One:
A commercial work place project in Lower Thames Street was commissioned to complete a full refurbishment of the existing offices and provide a new layout. The project included a removal of internal partitions and redesign of the internal layout with a high specification of interior design finishes, fittings and furnishing. The team comprised an Interior designer and I and the internal layout and architectural detailing was a requirement to ensure that the redesign was new and contemporary with building regulation compliance. The design package was detailed up to Tender stage, where the Client then went on to select a number of Contractors to complete the works.
Project Two:
Two large private residential schemes for Bellway Homes Ltd. One being a 70 flat and one being a 25 flat scheme. The 70 flat tower was a new build development and the 25 flat was part new build and part conversion of a locally listed education building into private flats.
The team comprised three personnel, a senior architectural technician, an architectural technologist and I. My role was to complete the tender and construction package for the conversion building in full, and to complete the window tender, the setting out elevations, stair core details, optimise the general arrangement plans for building control compliance, including ensuring the structural and m&e components were well co-ordinated and well planned within the design. Window details and window schedule, lift core details, external wall details, internal wall details, roof details, floor details, door details, handrail details, balustrade details, plans, sections and elevations.

EC Harris had recently won a tender bid to evaluate all of the primary schools in the London Borough of Ealing and to provide feasible proposals, with selected proposals, being taken through to gaining planning and completion on site with EC Harris acting as contract administrator on behalf of the London Borough of Ealing. To compile a feasible design, I would research the existing building conditions and the surrounding environment to understand the types of Planning Class Uses that were present for the vicinity in line with the Town and Country Planning Act 1947, the Local Development Framework and the Unitary Development Plan. I would then be in a position to understand the general indication of the ability to gain a grant of planning permission for the Client Requirements. If it was a feasible Client Brief, I would then look at relevant legislation and building regulations in accordance to the building typology and then I would start to present design options for the Client. I would work very closely with the Metric Handbook which provides guidance on minimal requirements for particular uses. With respect to an Education Building, I would want to understand the amount of students/children that would be required to use the building, I would also want to understand the amount of staff that would be required to use this building(s). I would then be in a position to allocate space for classrooms, dining, staff-offices and facilities, sanitary, multi-purpose halls, indoor and outdoor sporting and recreational facilities, car-parking and bicycle huts, and access to public transport. The Education building is a complex one and the requirements are dependable upon the age of the student user and the amount of students/users the building(s) is to accommodate.

The project tasks involved:

01. Understanding the client needs and objectives and presenting feasible options for appraisal.
02. Working with the project manager to understand the client budget, value of commission and time to be allocated to the project stages.
03. Liaising with the lead Architect and keeping him informed of my work, my decisions and to take advice from his experience.
04. Making applications to the London Borough of Ealing for Planning and Building Control compliance.
05. Refer to the NBS specification, details used within the building.
06. Create drawings for information and construction purposes.
07. Liaise with the in house Mechanical and Electrical engineers for the construction works coordination of design and drawings.
08. Inspect works on site and report my findings back to the lead Architect.
09. Complete RFI's, (request for information) to the Contractor's inquiries to complete construction works on site.
10. Understand the contract being used for construction, Standard Form of Building Contract, and the liabilities of EC Harris, the Client, and the Main Contractor

(Dec 2010 to Jun 2011)

Designer and CAD Technician

Central London

The project I participated was the 5* Caprice Gold Hotel based in Istanbul, Turkey. My main role was to Co-ordinate the design of the Interiors team. This included coordinating the Interiors project as a whole and then particular areas of design within the hotel with external consultant packages.

Two integral aspects of the role included designing the Chairman’s private office with views at high level overseeing the surrounding area at +52.000m absolute level. The design spurred from the Client and included opulent and luxurious architectural design and material finishes. There was a lot of Gold, Stone, Marble, and finishes with high ceiling levels and open plan spaces that followed a classical Ottoman style. The Recreation area for children included a variety of activities from Theatre to play room, babies’ room and arcade. The style followed a more interactive and dynamic design with colourful LED lighting, hard surface flooring and interesting ceiling coffers. I completed the packages for Measurement (QS), Tender and Construction. I coordinated the external consultants including M&E, Lighting, Structural Engineering, Spa consultants. The objective was to maximise the space and create the most fluid space with a high quality in interiors architecture and material specification. The other integral aspect of the role was to create a Quality Management System to deliver the Interiors package through AutoCAD Architecture Project Navigator. This included spending time with the office CAD Manager to learn how to best integrate the Interiors design packages, and then to hold seminars and training of the new Project Navigator system.

The project tasks involved:

01. Design Coordination of the Interiors package.
02. Measurement, Tender and Detail design of the Chairman’s office and Children’s recreation packages including GA plans, RCP plans, Floor and Wall finishes, Elevations, Joinery detail and specification.
03. Coordinate packages with external consultants, M&E services, Structural engineering, Spa consultants, and Lighting consultants.
04. Set up the Interior design Quality Management System through AutoCAD Architecture 2011 Project Navigator.
05. JCT SBC 05 (Rev 09) with Quantities

(2006 to 2007)

Architectural Assistant

Greater London

The project I participated was the OAO Gazprom Headquarters ‘Ohkta Center’ project, in St. Petersburg, Russia. I worked within a team of ten people. My particular role was to take the Architectural Envelope of one of the main buildings in the masterplan, the Sports and Leisure facilities, and complete the interiors spatial programme in terms of accommodating the required brief in square metres with allocated expected person occupancy, and establish an innovative and contemporary design that would include a fluidity of movement within the architectural envelope and throughout the internal spatial programme from one faculty to the following.

The two integral concepts I introduced was the allocation of a half Olympic sized swimming pool at +32.00m absolute level to encompass the amazing views over the Ohkta and Neva rivers, with panoramic views to the World Heritage Smolny Cathedral, to be enjoyed by Gazprom staff and visitors alike. The second integral aspect of the design was to have a canteen for 750 Gazprom staff located at +12.00m ground floor absolute level to allow for ease of evacuation in case of emergency, fulfilling the requirements for a solid Fire strategy, M&E allocation, and ease of access to outdoor facilities for leisure purposes.

The interiors design completed a strategy for incorporating as much as possible open plan areas throughout each floor plan which was complemented with mezzanine areas at particular intervals to emphasise the grandeur of double height floor areas, and to accommodate intimacy of areas with a lower clear ceiling height. The floor plans floated within the architectural envelope with minimal fixtures to the façade cladding, instead, transferring load down the main lift and stair cores at each end of the block and interim columns for additional support. This allowed for the external facades to be designed with a continually transparent triple glazing without the consistent view from outside being interrupted by internal floor connections. These voids were safe guarded with aspects of glazing, railing balconies, and planting to soften areas such as the staff library and IT facilities, and harden areas such as the squash courts and high end restaurant and bar on the top floor.

The project tasks involved:

01. Design the Leisure and Sporting Facilities.
02. Prepare GA plans, Sections, Elevations, Details, Reports and Schedules.
03. Prepare physical models.
04. Not taken to Contract stage
