Project Examples
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office operate a complex programme of international engagement
with a foreign public. Programmes are run in association with other government departments and a large
group of partners, they engage with a range of audience groups with differing methods and objectives. I
was instrumental in a resource mapping exercise which analysed these networks of influence. The project allowed analysis of the size and nature of communities reached, the efficacy of engagement methods used, the relative success of the different parties involved and the comparative programme costs.

Dow Jones wanted to target communication and marketing professionals within energy companies. I
worked with the Managing Editor, Energy & Commodities, Dow Jones Newswires to research and produce a webinar for this group. The report sought to understand the impact of social media in the sector, specifically how online discussion of biofuels and the food crisis was influencing, and being influenced by traditional media. The report showed that the debate was developing in user generated content in a way that was quite different to the traditional press. We delivered the presentation as a duo, the combination of researcher and industry commentator proving very effective.

Ecotricity, a green energy supplier, wanted to understand its own and its industry’s representation in the media in order to maximise media opportunities. I analysed national coverage to establish what was
being written where, who was speaking, and how this correlated with recent government announcements in the area. This allowed the company to ensure its messaging complemented media agendas and highlighted future media opportunities.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council wanted to approach key opinion formers
in order to represent its interests. I undertook a research exercise to identify what those stakeholders
were communicating, where they were communicating and how they were connected to each other. This allowed the association to target the key stakeholders meaningfully and efficiently.

First Word, a pharmaceutical information company, wanted a report which investigated the extent of the
industry’s engagement with social media. I developed the brief, undertook relevant secondary research,
developed metrics and interviewed key opinion leaders. I then wrote a 10,000 word report now on sale to
First Word’s 140,000 subscribers. I also wrote a 6,000 word report analysing the Bristol-Myers Squibb
acquisition of Medarex, again made available to subscribers.
